Blog: Digital Pioneers Academy Scholars Explored The Crossover’s Lessons and Embraced Interactive Reading

During this year’s World Book Day, The Gents’ Foundation (TGF) partnered with Larelève to distribute one hundred copies of The Crossover, at the Digital Pioneers Academy (DPA), in Washington, D.C., and lead an inspiring reading session on the biggest lessons from the novel with DPA scholars. Motivation and engagement among students during this event confirmed the need to continue to promote literacy among middle schoolers and beyond.

Digital Pioneers Academy scholars’ great interest in working through small groups underscores how access to high-quality literary work can foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of literature through interactive discussions. “The Crossover reading session beautifully demonstrated the power of literacy to connect students with a story and to each other,” Amiri Rivera Sillah, Associate Program Officer at The Gents’ Foundation pointed out. “Their engaged discussions highlighted the importance of fostering a love of reading that builds bridges and understanding.”

Written by Krame Alexander, The Crossover tells the story of twin brothers Josh and Jordan, basketball prodigies known as JB and Filthy McNasty. It delves into the dynamics of sibling rivalry, the pressures of expectations, and the passion for basketball, all while highlighting the importance of family and personal growth. As Marlie Alix, Personal Development Mentor at The Gents’ Foundation put it, “when placed in situations where we must collaborate despite our differences, humility becomes essential for working toward a common goal.”

During our reading session at Digital Pioneers Academy, scholars explored valuable lessons about family, friendship, love, and personal growth. Ultimately, The Crossover is a poignant coming-of-age story about brotherhood, identity, and the power of love and resilience, resonating with readers of all ages. “DPA scholars had the opportunity to understand that a sense of teamwork and humility are not innate qualities; they are developed through experiences and challenges,” Alix added

We offered these middle school students a unique opportunity to connect with the novel’s themes and characters, and DPA teachers fully supported the initiative. “We loved celebrating World Book Day with Larelève and The Gents’ Foundation because instilling a love of reading is a critical part of our work,” DPA teacher, Miss Marie Beasley said. In general, DPA scholars love receiving a book that they can personally relate to and enjoy having an opportunity to reflect on and discuss a book’s theme together. “We'd like to have more opportunities for events promoting reading and specifically books that represent diverse backgrounds and experiences,” Miss Beasley added

Essentially, the impact of The Crossover extends beyond its pages, and DPA scholars reflected that in their reading sheets. They understood that the message of unity and resilience is particularly relevant in today's world, where collaboration and empathy are more important than ever. The Crossover is more than just a novel; it is a powerful tool for education and personal development.

The positive sentiments towards the novel echoed among the scholars as well. “World Book Day at DPA was really fun and a great learning opportunity this year,” said DPA scholar, Ma’khynzie Priester. “We enjoyed reading and discussing the book together, and I really appreciated that we could keep a copy.”

Larelève and TGF believe that embracing the lessons of The Crossover can foster a sense of community and mutual respect among young readers, encouraging the next generation to strive for excellence while remaining grounded in humility and teamwork. By incorporating such impactful literature into educational programs and events like World Book Day, we can inspire the next generation to become compassionate, well-rounded individuals who value the importance of working together and supporting one another.
